In the exhibition, “The Ball,” Dalia Coldham documents, through photography, a ball held at the luxurious Faena hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The hotel, by architect Philip Stark, was designed with the vision of combining art and environment. The design focuses on architecture and technology located in Puerto Madero--Buenos Aires’ old shipping port. Coldham documents the professional dancers that perform on rollerskates to nostalgic disco music, the waiters and waitresses wearing masks in order to create a magical atmosphere, the tables laden with delicacies, gentlemen in evening wear, and ladies dressed in formal gowns--all while the crystal chandelier revolves above illuminated tables.
When Coldham looks through the lense of her camera, she sees the world through a microscope: everything gets a new angle and every single detail comes into clear, sharp focus. Through the camera she searches for the correct angle, lighting, and movement. Trusting her intuition, Coldham feels when the right moment in which to take the picture. Sometimes she’s surprised by pictures, revealed only in retrospect, caught by the camera. Motion, dance, sports and rock concerts attract her eye and camera lense. Coldham likes to photograph situations which contain lively events inside a bustling city, preferably at night. She dedicates herself to capturing the profiles and portraits of friends and faces that pass through life.
“I’m a photographer and the daughter of a photographer, born among cameras, film, a home developing lab, constantly surrounded by photos. I was born with the passion to commemorate every moment and hold on to time so it won’t pass, to create a never changing world.”
Dalia Coldham, currently residing in Maccabim, Israel, is also a Yoga instructor who believes in living the moment--the here and now, in full attendance--within an unstable ever changing world. She calls herself a “yogi photographer.” An artist that lives in the conflict between two different philosophies--flowing with the constant change of passing time and stopping time so it won’t pass --and shoots photos that represent the contrast between them.
